UPSL Announces Maryland Expansion With MD United Soccer Club

North Bethesda, MD Based Club Joins Beltway Division Ahead Of Fall Season

May 12, 2021 – Los Angeles, CA – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is pleased to announce MD United Soccer Club as its newest expansion club ahead of the Fall Season.

Based in Maryland's Montgomery County, MD United will begin UPSL play in the Northeast Conference Beltway Premier Division.

UPSL Northeast Conference Manager Paul Konneh said, "We are excited to welcome MD United Soccer Club to the UPSL. Maryland is a region where soccer is growing exponentially, and we believe there are many players who deserve the opportunity to showcase their best skills. We are certain that MD United will be a competitive team for the Beltway Division."

Michael Funes is Owner and President of MD United Soccer Club. A former DC United (MLS) academy youth player, Funes played professionally for Isidro Metapan and Santa Tecla FC in El Salvador. He also represented El Salvador's Under-20 Men's National Team.

MD United Soccer Club began locally in the Glen Burnie, MD, Premier League, and previously was a member of Maryland Majors Soccer League (MMSL).

"We have now chosen the UPSL because of the league's professional structure and important development over the past years," Funes said.


MD United will announce its Fall Season fixture calendar.

MD United Soccer Club is an American Soccer club currently based in North Bethesda, MD, and is a new member of the United Premier Soccer League. MD United Soccer Club will begin play in the UPSL's Northeast Conference Beltway Division.

MD United Soccer Club can participate in the qualifying rounds for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup through their affiliation and membership with the UPSL, the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA).
