UPSL Announces Mid-Atlantic Expansion with Northern Virginia United

Fairfax County, VA-Based Club Joins Northeast Conference for 2020 Season

February 14, 2020 – Los Angeles – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is pleased to announce Northern Virginia United as a member kicking off with the 2020 Fall Season.

Based in Fairfax County (Va.), Northern Virginia United is a registered business in the State of Virginia and is operated by its Board of Directors. Northern Virginia United will begin UPSL play in the Northeast Conference Mid-Atlantic North Division. The club is finalizing its venue options in compliance with UPSL National Division standards.

United Premier Soccer League Mid-Atlantic Division Manager Andy Salandy said, "We're excited to welcome a top club from the 'DMV' to the UPSL Mid-Atlantic Division. There is a lot of talent, and a good number of solid clubs looking to compete in a national league. The UPSL can provide that, and Brian Welsh and Chris Jennings are strong leaders for Northern Virginia United. We look forward to seeing them on the pitch this Fall Season."

Brian Welsh is Owner and Head Coach of Northern Virginia United. A native of Scotland, Welsh is a former Scottish professional player, coach and manager. He played 11 seasons and won a Scottish Cup with Dundee United FC, and was inducted into the club's hall of fame in 2012.

Northern Virginia United was created in 2018 as a member of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). The club will compete concurrently in the UPSL.

"Joining the UPSL will give some of our talented young players the opportunity to compete regularly against older, more experienced players. Opportunities for younger player competing and playing with more senior players is vital to our club culture and development pathway," Welsh said.

Chris Jennings is Director of Operations and Assistant Coach of Northern Virginia United. An experienced professional coach who has trained and developed an assortment of skillful players across the Washington D.C. metro area, Jennings currently serves as Boys ECNL Director at BRYC Elite Academy and is the Head Coach at Arlington (Va.)'s Bishop O'Connell High School.

The club will announce its upcoming game schedule.

Northern Virginia United is an American Soccer club currently based in Fairfax, Va., and a new member of the United Premier Soccer League. Northern Virginia United will begin play in the UPSL Northeast Conference.

Founded in 2018, Northern Virginia United can participate in the qualifying rounds for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup through their affiliation and membership with the UPSL, the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA).

United Premier Soccer League

The UPSL was formed in 2011 and currently includes more than 300 teams nationwide. The UPSL is the largest Pro Development League in North America. Each UPSL team is individually owned and operated, and is responsible for maintaining UPSL National League minimum standards.

UPSL teams are all eligible to participate in the U.S. Open Cup Qualifying Rounds through the leagues affiliation with the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA).
